» Feature Writer Barbara Pytel - looking forward to the series

As someone who has family in Poland next door, this topic interests me. When I visited Communist Poland in 1981, there were Russian spies in Polish apartment complexes, Russian military planes swooped over us in Poland at 4 a.m. just to remind us they were there, telephone conversations were recorded, radio stations were being jammed when Radio Free Europe came on, and mail was censored. I would venture a guess that old habits die hard.

» Feature Writer Kerry Kubilius - looking forward to the series

In response to looking forward to the series posted by pytel:

I, too, am looking forward to this series.

However, I'm under the impression that Poland has made quite a rebound from Soviet days - it's Belarus that still hasn't shaken the yoke.

In the case of Russia . . . well, anyone in Moscow will casually point out the KGB headquarters to you if you happen to pass by! As for "restricting the rights of the people" . . . I think there have been more gains than losses, by far.
